My Top Twenty Albums of 2011

1. St Vincent | Strange Mercy

A perfect album. I don’t mean that it is a 10/10 album, just that it does what it sets out to do perfectly. The bit crushed guitars mixing with Annie’s amazing voice never get old. My most listened to album this year.

2. Youth Lagoon | The Year of Hibernation

Music is so easy to record now that lo-fi records are made more by stylistic choice than by necessity anymore and I am not a big fan of things recorded and mixed poorly on purpose, but on this album it works. In fact, recorded any different and this album would lose a big chunk of its appeal. The songwriting -the best of the year as far as I’m concerned- is nostalgic and heartfelt and the muddy mix just makes everything feel warm and cozy.

3. PJ Harvey | Let England Shake

Someone told me that this could be the only album from 2011 that we are still talking about in 2021. It’s hard to argue with that assessment. Obviously a very English album, Let England Shake also feels striped down and simple at first, but really it is just very subtle. Throughout the album it sounds like there is an undercurrent pushing against the music. It creates for a dark, unsettling feeling that you know is there but can’t quite pinpoint.

4. Girls | Father, Son, Holy Ghost

Simple and epic at the same time. Not much to say about the album other than it is what it is and it is great.

5. Antlers | Burst Apart

It’s sad that this album always has to be compared to its predecessor (Hospice). Yes, we all know Hospice was a great, great album. This one is great too, just a different album. Less dark but probably easier to listen to.

6. Fleet Foxes | Helplessness Blues

Probably better than the debut album in most ways, but the debut album was so special, I don’t think this one can top it. Robin’s lyrics have grown from generic and occasionally uninspired in the previous album to soul-bearingly personal in this album. Also, I saw the band live for the first time in 2011 and they completely and totally blew me away.

7. Gruff Rhys | Hotel Shampoo

It’s been a while since this one was released (or at least since it leaked). I can no longer judge it properly as the album has gone into the “Oh yeah, this song reminds me of…” zone. This album now completely defines the first few months of the year for me.

8. Radiohead | The King of Limbs

If I had told you before this album was released that the next Radiohead album would have two semi-weak songs and the rest were good to great, you would have thought that was pretty good, right? The problem is that those two weak songs are back-to-back on the first half of the album and the album itself is only 8 songs long. Really, though, this album is much better than people give it credit for. Lotus Flower/Codex/Give up the Ghost might be the best three song stretch Radiohead has pulled off since Kid A. Also, Radiohead haven’t released an album that flowed together as well since Kid A.

9. Future Islands | On the Water

A BIG step up for this band. Sam Herring wisely reels in his dramatic voice just a bit for this album and it pays off. A really consistent album from beginning to end.

10. M83 | Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming

I’ve never really been into M83 before but this album hooked me. Everything sounds so big and over the top but that never really backfires like you’d think it could. Really, the ballads and slower stuff are probably what keeps this album grounded.

11. James Blake | James Blake

January 2011 Troy would choke on his coffee if he saw how December 2011 Troy has ranked this album. The overhype of this album was nauseating. It was being played in every coffee shop I went to on constant repeat and was being talked about by everyone everywhere as if a lost Beatles album had been found. As all hype goes, though, eventually it fell flat on its face and became a joke. Forget all of that. Give it a listen. It’s a good little album. Not great but good.

12. Wild Beasts | Smother

Solid album but a bit of an inconsistent second half hurts it.

13. 13 & God | Own Your Ghost

Once you get past the fact that this album is not nearly as great as the debut album you can start enjoying it. It’s a good listen from start to finish and the production is (as to be expected) top-notch.

14. SBTRKT | SBTRKT

Excellent first half that loses steam towards the end. This album got a lot of plays from me this year.

15. Destroyer | Kaputt

I can’t listen to this album all in one sitting. It’s just… Too much. I love the sound though and its great in small chunks.

16. Other Lives | Tamer Animals

This album probably would have been higher if I’d have had more time with it. I admittedly just started listening to it after I found out that they would be opening for Radiohead. I find myself wanting to come back to it often.

17. Lykke Li | Wounded Rhymes

Can’t really think of anything to say about this album other than I like it and I’m sure you’ve all heard it.

18. Yuck | Yuck

I saw Yuck open up for Smith Westerns and Yuck totally blew them out of the water. This album is pure 90s alt-rock and it’s great. Rubber is such an amazing closing song.

19. Son Lux | We Are Rising

An RPM Challenge album! I am in a band that takes part in the RPM Challenge every year (record an entire album in the month of February) and Son Lux made this album as part of the challenge. Besides that, though, it’s a really strong album on its own merits. Having friends like yMusic to help you polish off the songs certainly helps.

20. Tom Waits | Bad as Me

I’m not the biggest Tom Waits fan, so I’m not sure where this album rates in his discography but I took to it. The entire album is consistent but the final three songs are especially great.
